WMDF Community Grants
WMDDS
Children’s Dental Health Days
| $1150.00
The
grant is for Children’s Dental Health Day activities at the
Grand Rapids Children’s Museum for the event in February 2005.
This grant is to cover expenses related to the WMDDS putting on
this annual event to promote dental health and dental awareness
as part of Children’s Dental Health month. The request was
for $1000.00. The committee felt that additional funding would permit
expansion of the current scope of activity at this event.
Grand
Rapids Dental Hygiene Society
| $1500.00
The
grant is for supplies related to the Community Dental Outreach program
to be offered in July and August 2004. The project expects to evaluate
and treat upward of 75 children and 25 adults during this event
at The Mel Trotter Mission utilizing volunteer dental hygienists,
dentists and dental assistants. Last year the program provided services
at Mel Trotter that served 68 children and adults.
Oral
Health Coalition of Montcalm County
| $2850.00
The
WMDF has supported the Oral Health Coalition since 2000 in a program
that has grown from needs assessment and dental education to now
include placement of sealants in needy second grade children in
Montcalm County.
The
grant is for supplies and equipment related to a school based dental
sealant and oral health education program throughout 2004. Significantly,
the money is earmarked for a compressor to use with a portable sealant
unit.
Sparta
Health Center
| $3000.00
We
have supported the Sparta Health Center with an outreach program
to provide dental education and supplies (toothbrushes, toothpaste)
to the resident and migrant population around Sparta since 2000.
The present grant is to continue and expand this program. The grant
is for supplies related to providing dental health during 2004.
Miles
of Smiles
| $7000.00
The
Miles of Smiles Dental Van has provided over 12,500 dental services
since its inception, including preventative, diagnostic and restorative
dentistry. The van has historically provided service only to Medicaid
eligible children until WMDF provided funding to serve low-income
non-Medicaid eligible children. The grant is for funding dental
services to low income, uninsured, at-risk children via the Miles
of Smiles van in Ottawa County during 2004-2005. These children
would not otherwise be eligible for service via the Medicaid program.
Grand
Rapids Children’s Museum
| $1600.00
The
Grand Rapids Children’s Museum was a prior recipient of The
WMDF Delta Grant to establish the Open Wide exhibit at the Children’s
Museum. As part of the original funding an endowment was established
to service and maintain the exhibit for five years. The grant is
for additional needs to the exhibit. Specifically funding is to
finance a new, stand alone girl doll and to replace wooden teeth
that have not withstood the traffic of the exhibit with four sets
of ceramic teeth (with braces on one set).
The
Grand Rapids Home for Veterans
| $2900.00
The
Grand Rapids Home for Veterans dental clinic has existed since 1992.
The dental clinic provides services to approximately 725 low income
or indigent residents. Medicaid funding no longer exists for adult
care. Prosthetic services have been a considerable component of
the need care. The grant will provide funding for lab work related
to ongoing prosthetic services.
